Meet Our People: Philip Pope Appointed as Chair of the PRS Members’ Fund

We are delighted to introduce Philip Pope, the new Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the PRS Members’ Fund. As a seasoned composer, songwriter, and long-standing advocate for creators’ rights, Philip brings a wealth of industry experience and a deep-seated commitment to supporting our community.

Philip is a familiar face within the PRS for Music governance structure, having served as an elected Writer Council Member since 2019. Following his official appointment as a Fund trustee in 2021, his transition into the role of Board Chair marks an exciting new chapter in his mission to champion the interests of music creators and support their health and welfare.

A Legacy of British Comedy and Music

Educated at Downside School and New College, Oxford, Philip’s career has spanned over four decades across film, television, and radio. He first rose to prominence as a star and composer for the legendary radio series Radio Active, which later transitioned to television as KYTV.

His name is synonymous with the “Golden Era” of British comedy music. From co-writing the 1980 Hee Bee Gee Bees hit “Meaningless Songs” with Richard Curtis to his 10-year tenure as Musical Director for Spitting Image—where he co-wrote the UK Number 1 “The Chicken Song”—Philip has shaped the soundtrack of British satire.

His extensive portfolio includes theme tunes and scores for iconic shows such as: Whose Line Is It Anyway? (All 10 seasons), Outnumbered, The Fast Show (including “Jazz Club”), A Bit of Fry and Laurie and Yonderland.

Beyond comedy, Philip’s versatility is evidenced by his arrangement for Snow Patrol’s hit single “Run” and his extensive work on the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy radio and stage productions.

From the Screen to the Boardroom

While many recognise Philip from his on-screen roles in BlackadderOnly Fools & Horses (as the unforgettable Tony Angelino), and The Life of Rock with Brian Pern, his work behind the scenes at PRS for Music has been equally impactful.

Since joining the PRS Members’ Council in 2019, Philip has been a vital voice in strategic oversight and governance. As a Writer Director, he has focused on transparency, efficiency, and ensuring that the collective voice of music creators is heard at the highest levels.

A New Chapter with the PRS Members’ Fund

Philip joined the PRS Members’ Fund as a PRS Members’ Council observer in 2020 and was officially appointed as a trustee in December 2021. From January this year Philip began his new role as chair of the charity’s board of trustees.

“Philip’s career represents the incredible diversity of our membership,” says John Logan, PRS Members’ Fund General Secretary. “His firsthand understanding of the highs and lows of a life in music, combined with his experience in PRS governance, makes him the ideal person to lead the Fund as we continue to support our community in 2026 and beyond.”

About his appointment Philip said: “I am honoured to chair the PRS Members’ Fund with its long history of helping songwriters and composers. Over the past few years the Fund has seen much positive change including a governance review in 2025. With our strategic plan in place, the Fund can continue to make a real difference to the lives of members who need our support, now more than ever, in the changing music landscape and uncertain times they face. I look forward to the challenges ahead and to working with John Logan and his dedicated team.”

“On behalf of the Fund team, I would like to extend our warmest congratulations to Philip on his appointment as Chair” John Logan said. “Philip’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for the industry, and we are incredibly fortunate to have a leader who combines such a rich artistic legacy with a steadfast dedication to the welfare of his fellow creators. We look forward to seeing the PRS Members’ Fund thrive under his guidance as we enter this new chapter in 2026!”
