PRS Members’ Fund celebrates Daphne Oram Centenary With A New Initiative For Music Creatives.

In celebration of pioneering electronic music composer, Daphne Oram’s Centenary, the PRS Members’ Fund and Oram Awards are launching a new initiative to past and present winners of the awards to support mental health and wellbeing.

Born in 1925, Daphne Oram was a pioneering electronic composer, inventor of the Oramics Machine and co‑founder of the original BBC Radiophonic Workshop.

Daphne was a radical electronic composer, engineer and thinker working in a male-dominated world that often undermined and overshadowed her success. Oram played a vital role in establishing women at the forefront of innovation in newly-emerging audio technologies not only in the UK but around the world.

The Oram Awards builds on her legacy celebrating women, trans and non-binary artists in electronic music, past, present and future.​​

Celebrating Daphne’s centenary, the PRS Members’ Fund and Oram Awards launches the Shetland Artists’ Retreat to offer 10 Oram artists, who are eligible PRS members, a flat rate bursary to facilitate a stay at The Weaving Shed Gallery and Airbnb between November 2025 and March 2026.

This is an opportunity for eligible PRS members who are also Oram alumni, and actively working on material related to innovation in sound and music related technology, to have a break to focus and concentrate on writing or to explore an area of research or education related to their creative output or current project.

The Oram retreat reflects the PRS Members’ Fund’s ongoing commitment to supporting the holistic wellbeing of music creators, particularly women, trans and non-binary artists. We understand that mental and emotional wellbeing are vital for sustaining creativity and artistic careers – and that sometimes, a pause can be the most powerful step forward.
