Carroll Thompson becomes our new patron

April 8, 2021

Award-winning singer/songwriter and composer Carroll Thompson has joined the PRS Members’ Fund as a patron of the charity.

WE ARE EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE OUR NEW PATRON, CARROLL THOMPSON.

Raised in the gospel tradition and learned to play the piano at 8 years old, Carroll Thompson had her singles “I’m So Sorry” and “Simply in Love” topped the reggae chart in 1981, when she released her debut album.

Best known as the “Queen of Lovers Rock”, Carroll has won many awards including two GLR Reggae Awards for Best Female Performer and Best Song. This year the album “Hopelessly in Love” celebrates its 40th anniversary since its release and has been recognised as the best-selling UK Lovers Rock album achieving classic and iconic status within the music industry.

Carroll has also arranged and provided vocals for fellow artists as Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Robbie Williams, Pet Shop Boys, Billy Ocean, Chaka Khan, Boy George plus many others, and she also composed and contributed original film scores for BBC1 and BBC2, Oxford Films, Comedy Central, BAFTA and Academy Award winner, The Crying Game (Neil Jordon).

Her musical achievements are currently being collated by the Jamaican government as part of the UNESCO cultural global heritage initiative for the protection and recognition of Reggae music.

John Logan, PRS Members’ Fund general secretary, said: “We are delighted to welcome Carroll as our newest patron. Her creative energy and commitment to supporting fellow songwriters and composers will be a huge asset to the Fund.”

On her appointment, Carroll said: “I feel honoured to be joining the Fund as a patron. The work of the charity is absolutely essential in supporting the health and wellbeing of songwriters and composers, and I look forward to working with them in my new role.”
