20th Century Boy – The Musical (Review)

The 20th Century Boy musical, inspired by the life of Marc Bolan began its six day run at the New Wimbledon Theatre on Monday 23 June. Nicky Graham, PRS board member and the show’s co-writer and producer invited PRS for Music staff to watch the show.

Nearly four decades after the death of rock legend Marc Bolan in 1977, the 20th Century Boy musical which features some of Marc’s greatest hits tells the moving story of his life and his band T.Rex. The musical exposes some of the myths and takes the audience on a tearful yet joyful journey through his fascinating life.

Some of Marc’s hits featured in the musical include; Get It On, Ride A White Swan, Metal Guru, I Love To Boogie, Hot Love, 20th Century Boy and many more.

If you get the chance to see ‘20th Century Boy’ produced by our very own Nicky Graham, don’t miss it! Marc Bolan holds a special place in our hearts not only because we love his music but because his legacy has meant so much to the PRS for Music Members Benevolent Fund. Well, thanks to Nicky and the talented cast of this new show, Marc Bolan really does live again.

I didn’t know Marc’s life story before seeing this show but for me it managed to encapsulate all the highlights without it feeling like a list of events, as some bio-musicals do. Instead, the music of Marc’s band T-Rex had the audience on their feet ready to dance, thanks to great sound from the live band on stage. This is a good show. If you want a great night out, go see it! – Megg Nicol[/su_quote]

[su_quote]We had already bought our feather boas in anticipation of seeing 20th Century Boy at the New Wimbledon Theatre. Expectations were high and we were not disappointed. The place was packed with loads of people of all ages, many sporting the famous pink feather boa. The story of Marc Bolan’s life was told through his son Rolan, which took him and us on a journey of discovery of Marc’s life from a child up to the day he died. We laughed, we cried, and we laughed again as they went through the milestones good and bad, singing many of his famous tunes which culminated in a finale where they sung his best known songs in his typical colourful and eclectic way. The audience was on their feet singing loudly whilst waving their arms and feather boas.

George Maguire looked and sounded like Marc even exuding his famous sexiness and stole the show. As everyone left the theatre, the floor and seats were covered in pink feathers as was Wimbledon High Street where we walked to the station with many other happy audience members. The whole show was amazing and it was the best time we had ever had at any theatre show. We cannot wait for it to come to the West End. – Avril Clark[/su_quote]
